Problem
Finding a space to work remotely that works for you
Remote work has been glamorized by the convenience and comforts of working from home. However many are experiencing the struggle of finding the boundary between work and life when working from home.

50% are disturbed by stress related to working from home.

25% struggle to disconnect when working from home.
Objective
The goal of this project was to better understand the problems working professionals experience when working remotely.
Assumptions
These individuals have not established productive remote working habits and do not have access to a suitable environment.
Hypothesis
People working remotely from home are experiencing distractions that are affecting their productivity and work & life balance.

"I was initially overwhelmed trying to identify a challenging problem space, but I was excited when I decided to explore the problems related to remote work. I had no idea where it would lead, and that uncertainty helped remove any design biases."
Research
Learn how people feel about working remotely
Interviews were conducted with 5 different individuals to better understand the experience and pain points ofworking remotely.
Interview participants were selected based
on the following criteria:
-
Working remotely full time
-
Working in current position for 1+ years
-
Age of 21 - 42 years old
-
Living in Canada
-
Consent for interview findings in report

Whitney

Daniel
“My work space is in the living room of a shared house with friends..”

Rachel

Whitney
“It feels like I'm working alone, and I miss the in-person conversation..”

Daniel
“My work space is in the living room of a shared house with friends who also use the space..”

Rachel
“It feels like I've spent the whole day at home and haven’t stepped outside for fresh air...”

"It was an interesting process to interview participants and find a common trend in their responses when explaining their experience with remote work. These consistent themes helped to confirm the need for a solution.

How Might We
Help people who are working remotely
to find alternative workspaces?
Personas
A persona was created to represent the goals, motivations, behaviour, and pain points of our target users, helping to frame the direction and decision making.

Experience Map
An experience map identified the opportunities for a solution to help our persona through the process of trying to find a different work environment.

User Stories
User stories explored the actions our persona would take in finding a new workspace, and the benefit that the solution could provide. The core epic chosen was "Finding a workspace."
"As a remote worker I want to search for a private workspace so that I can be assured there will be silence for my meetings."
"As a remote worker I want to find a workspace with access to external monitors so that I can be more productive."
"As a remote worked I want to know about a workspaces wifi connectivity and reliability so that I can be sure there will be no interuptions while I am working.'
Task Flow
A task flow outlined the ideal path our persona would follow in order to complete the task of finding a workspace. This included searching, filtering, and reserving a workspace.

Low Fidelity
Translating sketches into wireframe designs allowed for the adjustment of size and spacing of different features and adding of greyscale colour.

Mid Fidelity
Developing mid-fi wireframes with copy and images helped to refine the layout flow and the choice of content to support the task flow.

Design Impact
Helping people find a better remote work & life balance
SpaceShare has helped people globally to connect with new and exciting places to work. This has helped people working remotely to establish a better work-life balance.
People feel more connected with their local community through SpaceShare and inviting others to use their own workspace. People now consider SpaceShare the "AirBnb" for workspace sharing.
What happens when 100 million people use your product?
A community of remote workers are connected and sharing the spaces they work in. People are actively sharing, swapping, and renting their workspaces, similar to AirBnb.
Businesses are also engaged in creating personalized workspaces for SpaceShare members and inviting people to utilize their space when working remotely.
Design Process
Trusting in the divergence and convergence of the design process and following the necessary steps to define a solution.
Decision Making
Time constraints can limit the decision making process and it is important to maintain confidence in your choices.
Perfection Syndrome
Don't allow perfection to be the enemy of done. Especially when working with short lead times with a large workload.
